Welcome to Epsom and Ewell Aikido Society, located in the vibrant town of New Malden. Established in the late 1950s, our club has over 60 years of experience in teaching the dynamic martial art of Aikido. Our aim is to provide a training environment that promotes fitness, self-defence, and personal development.
At Epsom and Ewell Aikido Society, we specialise in a fast-paced style of contact Aikido that is focused on self-defence. Our instructors are dedicated to ensuring that even beginners quickly gain the skills and confidence to handle various attacks, such as punches or grabs. As students progress through the ranks, they are trained to handle multiple attackers and learn effective techniques for defending against different weapons.
While self-defence is a key aspect of our training, we also believe in creating an enjoyable and supportive atmosphere. Regular training sessions not only improve physical fitness but also contribute to overall well-being. A basic understanding of Aikido self-defence techniques can boost confidence and assertiveness in everyday situations, although we cannot guarantee invulnerability to attack.
One of the unique aspects of Aikido is the flexibility it offers in dealing with attackers. Our wide variety of defence techniques allows individuals to choose the appropriate level of force needed to subdue an attacker. This aspect attracts students from various backgrounds, including medical and emergency services personnel.
Our club's style of Aikido is rooted in Yoshinkan, but we embrace an open-minded approach, welcoming other Aikido styles and incorporating different techniques or exercises that enhance our practise. During the pandemic, we introduced more weapon-against-weapon training, including the use of staff and sword techniques, which complement our traditional weapons-taking techniques.
Beginners are welcome to join our training sessions wearing comfortable clothing, such as t-shirts and tracksuit bottoms. The first lesson is free of charge, giving you the opportunity to experience Aikido firsthand. Following the introductory lesson, there is no obligation to join, but we hope you decide to continue your training with us. Membership fees can be paid on a monthly basis or per session, ensuring access to affordable training.
Epsom and Ewell Aikido Society takes pride in its long-standing history, established in 1958 by Sensei D. G Weir. As part of the Aikido Research Federation and with instructor and student insurance under the British Aikido Board, we are committed to providing high-quality training in a safe and supportive environment.
