Efficient Swimming offers open water swim coaching in Lyme Regis, Dorset, provided by John Hodgetts, a fully qualified STA Level 2 swimming instructor. John is dedicated to helping both new and experienced swimmers gain confidence and develop a more efficient and effective swimming technique in open water.
John's qualifications include being coached and qualified by Keri-anne Payne, an Olympic silver medallist and two-time world champion, and Tracey Baumann, a former Master Coach at Total Immersion and current head coach at SwimMastery in Windsor. With their guidance, John aims to enable more people to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of swimming in the open water.
In his coaching sessions, John focuses on achieving a relaxed, efficient, and coordinated body movement, with the arms, legs, and core working together seamlessly. He emphasises the importance of relaxation, balance, streamline, and smoothness, along with easy breathing. The goal is to swim through the water rather than on top of it.
John conducts his coaching sessions from April to November in the sea at Lyme Regis, and also offers sessions out of season at Highlands Leisure Pool in Eype, near Bridport. Additionally, he organises group workshop sessions at various times of the year at Newlands Pool in Charmouth.

Besides coaching, John also organises swim holidays, with a swim camp scheduled for September 2023 in Lyme Regis. The three-day camp includes two hours of group pool coaching with video analysis, sea swims (weather permitting), and opportunities to explore the local area, including restaurants and pubs in Lyme Regis. Accommodation is not included, but John can recommend local places to stay or assist with bookings.
Participants of the swim camp will have the opportunity to stay in a luxury Bed & Breakfast with seven individually designed double en-suite rooms. The accommodation offers stunning views of Lyme Bay, the Jurassic coast, and the iconic Golden Cap. It is conveniently located just a ten-minute walk from the beautiful seafront of Lyme Regis. Free on-site parking and access to the extensive garden are also available.
The typical programme of the swim camp includes welcome drinks on the beach, a safety talk about open water swimming, a sea swim, pool swim with video analysis, optional beach-side sauna, group outings for meals or individual exploration of the area, and sea swims at Seatown or Eype with a picnic lunch.
