The Makotokan Dojo, founded by Steve Nickerson Shihan, is internationally recognized and registered at the Honbu (World Headquarters) in Japan. The name Makotokan translates to the “House of Sincerity,” reflecting the dojo's commitment to sincerity, honesty, loyalty, and friendship.

Aikido is a modern martial art derived from ancient Samurai fighting techniques. Developed in the 1920s by Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido focuses on harmonizing with opposing forces rather than combatting them. The Yoshinkan style of Aikido, founded by Gozo Shioda Sensei, emphasizes the study of fundamental movements and solid basic techniques, as well as gaining philosophical insight into life and human relationships. Yoshinkan Aikido is non-competitive, non-violent, and promotes cooperation and harmony over aggression.
