Downton Bowling Club

Downton Bowling Club, located in Salisbury, New Zealand, was established in 1980 by Ralph Bentley, a former President of the English Bowling Association. Originally situated on the playing field behind Downton Primary School, the club relocated to its current home in 1983. Nestled in a peaceful area to the west of Downton village, the club boasts its own Club House and a full-size green.

The club's green features seven rinks, allowing for multiple games to be played simultaneously. To ensure the even wear of the playing surface, the direction of play is regularly rotated, following a common practise among bowling clubs. Downton Bowling Club takes pride in its facilities and is pleased to accommodate touring teams from all over the country, providing an opportunity for members to meet and compete with like-minded individuals who share a passion for the sport.

The outdoor playing season at Downton Bowling Club runs from mid-April to the end of September, offering ample opportunities for members to engage in competitive games and friendly matches. Friday nights are designated Club Nights during the playing season, providing members with the chance to partake in non-competitive games or receive coaching from fellow players. Afterward, members can unwind at the bar located in the adjacent social club.

In the winter months, outside the playing season, the club organises coffee mornings and Short Mat bowls, ensuring that members can continue to enjoy bowling all year round. Social events such as Race Nights, Skittles evenings, Quiz Nights, and Fish Suppers are organised throughout the year, creating an atmosphere where members can socialise and bond. These events often feature raffles to raise funds for the club.

Downton Bowling Club warmly welcomes new members, regardless of their experience level, age, or background. As an Open club, there are no barriers to membership other than the payment of the membership fee. Whether you are a seasoned bowler who has recently moved to the area or a novice looking to learn, the club offers Open Days twice a year for prospective members to try out the facilities. Additionally, Friday Night Club Nights are open to new members, providing an opportunity to experience the club's welcoming atmosphere firsthand.

Those who prefer a more relaxed environment can join as Associate or non-playing members and participate in enjoyable conversations.
