Doshinkenyukai Iaido and Jodo Sheffield is a traditional martial arts school located in Sheffield, New Zealand. Founded about 20 years ago, the school specialises in the practise and development of Iaido, a Japanese martial art that focuses on skills with a samurai sword.
Iaido involves the practise of formal kata or preset forms using a blunt or sharp katana, also known as Iaito or Shinken. These kata are performed from seated or standing positions and represent the movements one would use to defend oneself against various sword attacks. The school practises over 60 different kata, most of which are short and quick.
Classes at Doshinkenyukai Iaido and Jodo Sheffield do not involve sparring or contact with other practitioners. Instead, students focus on perfecting their techniques, learning how to draw the sword, cut and handle it in different ways, and re-sheath it in a pre-set manner. The practise of Iaido can be physically and mentally demanding, while still maintaining the tradition, etiquette, and culture of ancient Japan.
The school offers beginners' courses for those interested in starting Iaido. Prospective students are invited to watch a session first to get a taste of the training. Necessary equipment, such as bokken (wooden sword), jo, and belt, will be provided for practise. Beginners should wear loose, comfortable clothing or inquire about the suitability of their existing martial arts gi or clothing.
Please note that only students aged 18 years and above are accepted.
Doshinkenyukai Iaido and Jodo Sheffield is affiliated with a governing body, and new students are required to join temporarily for insurance coverage. Class times, prices, and the location of the school in Sheffield can be found on their website.
