Both experienced sailors and those newer to sailing are invited to crew on Botany Bay Yacht Club's mixed fleet of keel and sports boats. As the biggest keelboat club in Botany Bay, they offer a great opportunity for sailing enthusiasts to get involved.
The sailboats at Botany Bay Yacht Club typically have between 2 and 12 people on board, and many are happy to have an extra crew member or have a spot for regular crew. On a racing yacht, there are various positions available, such as the skipper or helmsman, the foredecker or bowman, the tactician, the maintrimmer, headsail trimmer, and the spinnaker trimmer. On the smaller yachts, some of these positions may be combined.
For those new to sailing, the twilight races held on Friday nights from October to March are the perfect way to get started and develop your skills. These races are held over shorter courses in the sheltered waters of Georges River and Kogarah Bay, making them safe and enjoyable for beginners.
If you already have some sailing experience and are looking to experience the thrills of flying a spinnaker, Botany Bay Yacht Club offers the opportunity to crew on a Saturday afternoon bay race. Whether you're interested in trimming, a foredeck position, or simply being out on the water, the club will match you with a skipper and give you the chance to try different boats until you find the perfect fit.
To get started, all you need to bring is a hat, sunscreen, and water. Remember to wear shoes with white soles, such as trainers, plimsolls, or volleys. It's also a good idea to bring a spray jacket and an extra layer, as you'll be on the water for a few hours. Feel free to bring some snacks and drinks to keep you fueled throughout the race. Most boats have space below deck for a sail bag with a change of clothes.
If you require gloves or are looking to upgrade your wet weather gear or shoes, you can visit Herrick Sailmakers downstairs at the Botany Bay Yacht Club. They offer the latest Slam gear, so you'll be well-equipped for your sailing adventure. For opening hours or to check if your size is in stock, you can get in touch with Graeme Herrick at 0419 419 373.
To participate in the sailing events, please email the club with your phone number, email address, and any sailing experience you may have. It's recommended to arrive at the club at least an hour before a twilight race start or two hours before a bay race.
