Tai Chi Chuan originated over 700 years ago and was developed as a martial and healing art in China. The art is believed to be much older, with elements and practises that date back thousands of years. Today, Tai Chi is primarily practised for its health benefits. The graceful and slow movements of Tai Chi are a sight to behold.
This ancient art has evolved into five primary styles: Chen, Yang, Wu, Sun, and Hao.
Chen Style Tai Chi has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century. It is attributed to the late Chen Fake of the Chen family, who developed his own unique style based on movements and forms he learned and practised with his grandfather, Chen Changxing. Chen Style Tai Chi, also known as Chen Tai Chi, was originally developed to improve fitness, stamina, and strength. Chen Fake became popular for his unbeatable combat skills attributed to his practise of Tai Chi.
Chen Tai Chi is characterised by its explosive movements, including jumps, kicks, and strikes. The foundation of Chen Tai Chi lies in silk reeling-spiral movements that flow from the feet to the hands. It combines powerful stances for strength and agility, as well as slow, graceful movements alternated with quick, forceful ones. Practising Chen Tai Chi can provide a good cardio workout and encourage toning and elasticity in muscles and joints, bringing the body into equilibrium and balance.
Chen Tai Chi forms can be executed in three different ways or practise methods, depending on the student's flexibility. This makes it suitable for students of all ages and physical abilities. Master Chen, as a 22nd Generation Chen style Tai Chi disciple of Grand Master Chen Xianwang Yang Hui, has a deep understanding and mastery of the art, and he is dedicated to passing on his knowledge to his students.
