CheckMat Plymouth is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school located in Plymouth, New Zealand. Affiliated with Checkmat, one of the top Brazilian Jiu-jitsu teams in the world, the school offers a high-quality training experience for martial arts enthusiasts of all skill levels.
The affiliation with Checkmat was established in 2018 under the leadership of Leo Vieira, a renowned figure in the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu community. Being part of the Checkmat family has allowed CheckMat Plymouth to connect with a global network of affiliates dedicated to promoting and practising the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
At CheckMat Plymouth, the lead instructor is Marco Canha, who is the head of Fight Zone London and a black belt under 9-time world champion Ricardo Vieira. Instructor Ian Harrop trains regularly in London with Marco, and other members of the school are also welcome to join these training sessions. Marco is also invited down to Plymouth for seminars, further enriching the learning experience for students.
Ian Harrop, a highly experienced martial artist, is one of the lead Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt instructors at CheckMat Plymouth. With a passion for the sport and a dedication to excellence, Ian has trained and competed in various martial arts disciplines before falling in love with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2007. He has since travelled the world, honing his skills and learning from some of the greatest names in BJJ. Ian's coaching experience extends to adults, juniors, and kids, making him a versatile and knowledgeable instructor.
Amy Winterson, another black belt instructor at CheckMat Plymouth, has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2009. She opened her own BJJ school in 2016 alongside Ian Harrop and has since become a respected figure in the BJJ community. Amy is dedicated to continuous improvement, regularly travelling for competitions, seminars, and training camps to enhance her understanding and skill set. In addition to coaching, Amy is also a certified yoga instructor and leads the 'Yoga for BJJ' classes within the club, promoting mobility and overall health among students.
