About

Change Skill – Practical Tai Chi Chuan, located in Coburg, Melbourne, Australia, is a renowned school that offers training in the traditional Chinese internal martial art of Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi Chuan, also known as Taiji quan, is a comprehensive system of well-being and a proven combat system.

At Change Skill, the instructors teach Cheng Tin Hung's Wudang style, which was passed down by the late Master Dan Docherty. This style is considered practical for both health and self-defence purposes. The art incorporates elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chi kung (Qigong), making it a holistic practise for physical and psychological well-being.

The core principle of Tai Chi Chuan is about adapting to change and finding balance in life. It teaches practitioners to understand the concept of Yin and Yang and how to transition between the two. In a martial context, the art emphasises using an opponent's strength against them, much like water flowing around and eroding hard surfaces.

Change Skill welcomes individuals of all ages and fitness levels. There is flexibility in training, allowing students to focus on specific aspects of the art, such as health exercises or martial arts training. The school provides a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone to learn and grow.

The Wudang style taught at Change Skill traces its roots back to Master Cheng Tin Hung, who practised and taught in Hong Kong until his passing in 2005. He was widely recognised as a skilled martial artist and was affectionately called the “Tai chi bodyguard” by the press. Master Cheng's style, influenced by the southern Wu family style, was named “Wudang” style after the famous Wudang mountain.

After Cheng Tin Hung, the late Master Dan Docherty inherited the art and continued teaching it. The term “Practical” was used to honour Cheng's reputation as a practical martial artist. Today, both the Wudang and Practical names have been used by other styles of Tai Chi as well.

If you are looking to develop calmness, vitality, and the ability to handle challenging situations, Change Skill – Practical Tai Chi Chuan is the perfect place for you.
