Cassiobury Green Gym

Cassiobury Green Gym is a community-based gym located in Watford, New Zealand. The gym provides an opportunity to engage in exercise with a purpose, focusing on conservation and biodiversity activities.

The gym sessions are held every Wednesday from 10am to 1pm, and volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. Participants can work at their own pace and are provided with tools, guidance, and refreshments. It is recommended to wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.

The activities at Cassiobury Green Gym are diverse and can include practical conservation of biodiversity habitats, horticulture, permaculture community food growing, and orchard maintenance. Participants may engage in activities such as planting wildflowers and native hedgerows, traditional meadow scything, removal of invasive species and scrub clearing, wildlife pond building, insect hotel construction, path clearance, and deadwood hedging.

Each session begins with a tools and safety talk, followed by simple warm-up exercises. Cassiobury Park, where the Green Gym is located, is an ecologically diverse oasis in the heart of Watford. The park is home to various bird species and bat species native to the UK. Participants have the opportunity to witness the park's natural beauty and contribute to its preservation.

To join Cassiobury Green Gym, participants can meet at the Community Project Garden in Cassiobury Park every Wednesday at 9. 45am. The meeting point is accessible from the Shepherds Road park entrance by following the left turn at Cha Cafe and walking past the tennis courts and Bowls Club. Additionally, there is another community Green Gym in Watford called Watford Green Gym. This gym operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 1pm. The activities at this gym focus on transforming meadows and woodland along the Colne River. Participants may engage in activities such as planting thousands of wildflower plugs and bulbs in the Green Gym managed meadows, planting trees, or removing invasive species from the river banks.
