Buckhorn Weston Cricket Club, also known as BWCC, is a vibrant and inclusive cricket club located in Gillingham, New Zealand. The club welcomes both playing and non-playing members of all ages, from very young to very old, creating a family-friendly and supportive environment for all cricket enthusiasts.
Under the strong leadership of Nicola Lavis, the Chairwoman of the club, BWCC has experienced great success in recent years. The adult teams have a full fixture card, including mid-week and Sunday matches, with aspirations of building a League team for 2024. The women's team has shown great prowess, winning the Softball League trophy and the Dorset 100 Cup. In their first hardball season, they secured a commendable second place in the Dorset Super-8s.
Additionally, the LBWs team is expanding into the Somerset League this year, showcasing the growth and ambition of the club.
BWCC is not only focused on the adult teams, but also on nurturing young talent. The All Stars and Dynamos programmes have been highly successful, attracting 42 children to the club on a regular basis. A dedicated coaching and volunteer team ensures that these young players have a fun and positive experience. This season, the club is offering All-Stars and Junior training, with the plan of entering U9 and U11 teams into the Dorset League.
Furthermore, the club is encouraging parents to get involved and pick up a bat themselves by introducing a hardball club training evening on Tuesdays.
The club prides itself on creating a welcoming environment for all. The ECB grant received last year has facilitated improvements to the club's infrastructure, including resurfacing the driveway and acquiring new picnic benches and seating. The committee, along with valuable Vice Presidents and volunteers, tirelessly work to raise funds to support the club's development. Their efforts have been instrumental in maintaining and building the remarkable cricket club that BWCC is today.
Aside from cricket matches, BWCC hosts a variety of exciting events throughout the year, such as Bingo nights, barbecues, and a Club Open Day. These events provide an opportunity for members and their families to come together and enjoy the camaraderie of the club.
