About

Bowls Hornby, formerly known as the Paparua Bowling Club, has a rich history dating back to its formation in 1919. It is located at the Hornby Domain in Christchurch, New Zealand. In its inaugural year, the club had 27 members, with Julius Caesar serving as the first President and a nine-member committee assisting him. Despite the lack of running water and flushing toilets in those early days, the club managed to open its bowling green and pavilion for the start of the 1920/21 season, which was quite an accomplishment.

To avoid confusion with the Paparua Prison location and to accommodate players from other city clubs who were travelling to the wrong place, the club changed its name to Bowls Hornby in 1928. Over the years, the club has undergone significant developments. In 1994, planning for a second green began, and by 1997, it was completed. This second green, measuring 38.

5 × 38. 5m, is one of the largest in Canterbury. Additionally, the club rooms underwent major renovations in 2002, with ongoing improvements and upgrades over the years.

The committee of Bowls Hornby consists of dedicated individuals who contribute to the smooth operation of the club. The current committee includes Patron Bob Shearing, President John Hannam, Vice President Derek Owles, Immediate Past President Keith Miskimmin, Secretary/Administration Ann Miskimmin, and Finance Manager/Treasurer Michael Sumpter. Committee members also include Ann Wright, Glenys Finlinson, Tony Grimwood, Ian Warren, Club Captain Derek Owles, Centre Delegate Ian Warren, Club Recorder Keith Miskimmin, and Match Committee members James Aldridge and Shaun McNicholl for both men's and women's teams.

The club also has a team of selectors for both men and women divisions, with Trevor Kennett, Ann Wright, and Dennis Levers taking on those respective roles. Moreover, Bowls Hornby boasts accredited club coaches, Ian Warren and Dave Vincent, who are available to assist and guide new and experienced players alike. The club takes pride in its well-maintained facilities, including a spacious and meticulously cared for green overseen by the Green Superintendent, Tony Grimwood.

At Bowls Hornby, they welcome new players throughout the season and invite them to have a go and experience the sport of lawn bowls. Prospective players can arrange a chat and/or meet-up with one of the club's coaches, Ian Warren or Dave Vincent, by contacting them directly. The club can be contacted via phone at 03 349 7262 or by email at hornbydbc@gmail. Com.

Interested individuals can also find more information and updates about the club's activities, membership fees, championship draws and results, interclub draws, tournaments, social events, and facilities for hire on their website powered by Sporty. Co. nz.
