“Bothwell Castle Golf Club: A Century of Golf”. The book chronicled the rich history of the club and its significant milestones throughout the years.
Bothwell Castle Golf Club is situated just 10 miles from the bustling city centre of Glasgow, offering golf enthusiasts a serene escape in a mature woodland setting. The club celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2022, marking a monumental milestone in its existence.
The course itself boasts a combination of relatively flat and undulating fairways, providing a unique and challenging playing experience for golfers of all skill levels. The recent rainfall has softened the conditions, so players are advised to exercise caution on slopes and bankings. Winter greens are currently in play due to frost, with the chipping and putting greens temporarily closed.
For the convenience of members and visitors, the clubhouse opens its doors from 6:30 am until closing time. The locker rooms are also available for use during these hours. The large and modern clubhouse serves as a gathering place for socialising and enjoying the camaraderie that comes with the sport.
Bothwell Castle Golf Club is renowned for its excellent facilities and is a popular venue for visitors and visiting groups. Once you enter through the castle gates, you will be greeted with state-of-the-art amenities that enhance your overall experience at the club.
The club has a fascinating history dating back to its formation in 1922 by a group of local men. The official opening took place on the 16th of June 1923, graced by the presence of the Earl of Home, father of Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home. The 18-hole course initially spanned a 110-acre site between the 13th-century castle and the small village of Bothwell.
However, in 1960, the club faced a challenge when it was unable to accept an offer to buy the course. Subsequently, a developer purchased the land, resulting in the loss of 7 holes for housing. The club had to adapt and develop new grounds to replace these holes, leading to the opening of a new section of the course in 1973.
In 1972, Bothwell Castle Golf Club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a week of events, including an Exhibition Match in aid of Charity. Esteemed players like 5-time Open Champion Peter Thomson, leading Irish golfer Christie O'Connor, and 1963 Open Champion Bob Charles participated in the match, showcasing the club's prominent status in the golfing community.
The club secured its long-term future in 1976 by purchasing the course for 70,000, ensuring its continued existence and growth. To commemorate the 75th anniversary in 1997, Lady member Sheila Beckett produced a book titled “Bothwell Castle Golf Club: A Century of Golf,” which delved into the club's history and celebrated its contributions to the sport.
