Brisbane Flying Group Pty Ltd, established in 1972, is a not-for-profit flying group based at Archerfield Airport in Brisbane. With a maximum of 50 shareholders, the group is managed by a Board of Directors comprised of six shareholders who serve in honorary capacities. Two board members retire each year during the Annual General Meeting, giving other shareholders the opportunity to take on management roles. Outgoing directors may also stand for re-election.
The board meets regularly to discuss and handle the group's affairs, while day-to-day issues are managed by the Group Secretary, Finance Director, and Maintenance Director. The Annual General Meeting is held in early December, during which the directors report to the shareholders. Audited financial reports are presented and discussed, followed by the rotation of directors, general business, and shareholder discussions.
Currently, the Brisbane Flying Group owns and operates two Cessna 172S aircraft: VH-WPL, a 2001 model C172S, and VH-WPI, a 2006 model C172SP. These aircraft are well maintained and flown regularly, and they are stored in a hangar leased from Archerfield Airport Corporation to protect them from inclement weather. Only financially current group shareholders with a minimum of a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), current Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) medical certificate, and Biennial Flight Review (BFR) are allowed to fly the aircraft.
Shares in the group are usually available and can be purchased at market rates.
Over its history, Brisbane Flying Group has operated various aircraft models, including Beechcraft Bonanza and Grumman AA5B “Tiger” aircraft. For many years, the group operated three Grumman Tigers, which served them well. However, in 2010, the decision was made to sell these ageing aircraft. In October of the same year, the group started operating its first C172S aircraft, VH-WPL, and in August of the following year, VH-WPI, the second C172SP, was added to the fleet.
These aircraft have been extensively flown across Australia and continue to provide shareholders with a practical and cost-effective means of engaging in and enjoying their flying experiences.
