Barlia Football Centre

Barlia Football Centre is a beloved sports complex and football pitch located in Glasgow. Since its establishment in 1992, it has been an integral part of the local community, providing a space for individuals of all ages to enjoy the beautiful game.

Following a temporary closure during the Covid-19 pandemic, there were initial doubts about the facility's reopening. However, with the overwhelming support of the community, the “Save Our Pitches” campaign was launched to revive Barlia Football Centre as an essential community asset.

The future holds exciting plans for Barlia Football Centre, as it aims to continue serving the community with a range of activities and events. Currently, the facility offers two 5-a-side pitches that are open for free community access on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. Kids are especially encouraged to participate, and no booking is required. However, please note that access is weather permitting.

In addition to community access, Barlia Football Centre also caters to the needs of adults in the area. The facility hosts a “Monday Drop-In” programme, starting on January 8th, 2024, and lasting for 12 weeks. This programme is tailored to adults aged 50 and above, or those who prefer to play at a more relaxed pace. The Monday Drop-In sessions begin at 11am and offer a combination of football activity from 11am to 12 noon, followed by a soup and sandwich break from 12 noon to 1pm, allowing for social interaction and friendly chat.

One of the highlights of Barlia Football Centre is the popularity of its walking football sessions. Walking football is a fast-growing activity for older individuals in Scotland, offering numerous benefits such as improved fitness, weight loss, enhanced well-being, and socialisation with like-minded individuals. The walking football sessions take place every Monday from 11am to 1pm at Barlia, and participants are encouraged to arrive earlier for warm-up activities and team organisation. It is important to complete a registration form before attending the first session, and proper footwear such as astro or rubber studs, as well as shin pads, are recommended.

Participants are advised to bring drinking water and warm clothing during colder months.

To ensure a positive and respectful environment, Barlia Football Centre has implemented a code of conduct for all participants to follow. This code emphasises fair play, respect for match officials and opponents, and the promotion of high standards of behaviour. Additionally, it discourages offensive or abusive language, bullying, and harassment.

The reopening of Barlia Football Centre is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the coaches and staff. Their efforts have been greatly appreciated by the local community, as well as the individuals and organisations who contributed to the funding and food donations that made the revival possible. Furthermore, Barlia Football Centre is grateful to Sustrans Scotland for the opportunity to host a cycle repair kit, which is available for loan to CCFTrust members free of charge. This gesture demonstrates the commitment of Barlia Football Centre to provide a comprehensive community experience.
