The Berwick family has been at Barbarafield since 1871, and now in its fourth generation, the riding school continues to provide excellent equestrian experiences for riders of all ages and skill levels.
Barbarafield Riding School offers a range of riding options, from introductory sessions that last for 20 minutes to experienced hacks that can go up to 3 hours. They also provide kids with half-day or full-day “pony experiences” during school holidays and offer lessons throughout the term. One of their most popular activities is the 1-hour farmland ride that takes place daily, immersing riders in the stunning countryside.
The riding school's hacks are a hit among riders, as they cater to all experiences and skill levels. The routes take riders through the sprawling 300 acres of farmland owned by the Berwick family, utilising local tracks and the newly opened Pilgrimes Way. Smaller groups can be formed during the ride, allowing experienced riders to enjoy a canter while beginners take a shorter route for a relaxing walk and trot.
For children, Barbarafield Riding School hosts fun days during school holidays, offering half-day and full-day activities. These include exciting pony club games that keep kids engaged and entertained. Additionally, the riding school offers the option of 2-hour and 3-hour hacks upon request. The three-hour trek covers an impressive 20 kilometres of land, perfect for riders seeking a fast-paced and scenic adventure.
Qualified instructors are always available to provide instruction whenever necessary. For young riders, there is a 20-minute introduction or a half-hour instructional hack, which serves as an excellent starting point for horse riding. Once riders have mastered the trot, they can progress to hour-long hacks.
Barbarafield Riding School is situated on a working farm, allowing riders to witness various farming activities throughout the year. From calving and lambing to haymaking and combining, riders can experience the sights and sounds of a working farm from the back of a horse. Rides take place in all weather conditions, except for instances of ice, hurricane-force winds, and lightning. Riders are advised to dress appropriately for the weather.
When it comes to equipment, riders do not need to worry as Barbarafield Riding School provides a wide selection of riding hats and boots for borrowing. Any shoe or boot with a heel is suitable, and gloves are recommended, especially during winter. The riding school accepts payment in cash, cards, and bank transfers.
For pricing, the riding school offers various options. The introductory ride of 20 minutes costs 18 for children aged 4 to 5 years old, while a 30-minute ride is priced at 20. Hour-long rides are available for 38, and riders can opt for a 90-minute ride for 55. Longer rides, such as a 2-hour hack, cost 75, and a 3-hour ride can be arranged upon request.
Group discounts are available for hacks, and lessons are priced at 25 for a half-hour and 42 for a 1-hour group lesson (45 minutes if only one rider is present). Kids fun days are also offered, with a half-day priced at 55 and a full-day priced at 80 (for children aged 8 and above, packed lunch required). Private sessions can be arranged.
