Avon Sailing Club, located in Gloucester on the River Severn below Tewkesbury, is a thriving sports club that offers club sailing, cruising, and racing opportunities. The club's picturesque clubhouse is situated at Chaceley Stock on the west bank of the river. Avon Sailing Club operates from March through to December, with organised family activities during the summer and friendly racing on most Sundays.
Sundays are particularly popular at Avon Sailing Club, as the day is dedicated to organised races, followed by a delightful tea and cake session after the second race. For newcomers to sailing, the club ensures that there is ample room on the water, and at least one safety boat is present for added security. Members have the freedom to enjoy free sailing any time, however, organised safety cover is not provided. The club operates on a volunteer basis, encouraging members (after their first year of membership) to contribute to its organisation and management.
Members may be requested to assist with activities such as organising Sunday races or helping out with afternoon teas.
Avon Sailing Club prides itself on being a friendly club that welcomes sailors of all skill levels. Beginners need not be intimidated by racing, as experienced racers will always be mindful and avoid any potential issues. The club promotes and encourages sailing at all levels, whether it be for leisurely cruises or competitive racing.
Members who own boats kept in the Boat or Cruiser Park are urged to maintain their immediate surroundings. Mowers and strimmers are provided and stored under the race control cabin for this purpose. Some members choose to camp on the club grounds using tents or caravans. However, the club requires that tents be dismantled when not in use.
Caravans may be kept on the premises between April and October, subject to availability and payment of an annual or nightly fee.
Avon Sailing Club places a high priority on safety and encourages as many members as possible to have a basic knowledge of operating the club's safety boats. Safety boat training is offered to increase members' skills and preparedness for any unforeseen circumstances.
For those who do not own their own boats, Avon Sailing Club provides rental options. Members can hire a range of boats, including Toppers and RS Terras suitable for youngsters, as well as RS Visions for adults and families. Any equipment faults or breakages should be reported to a member of the committee, whose contact details can be found on the club's website.
Social events are a regular occurrence at Avon Sailing Club, offering opportunities for members to connect and enjoy the vibrant community. These events range from camping weekends and working parties to the Commodores' summer parties, annual dinner and dance, and Avon week. Avon week is particularly popular, with many families camping for a week at the end of August and participating in organised events, such as sailing trips to other locations on the river.
At the beginning of each season, a working party is organised to clean up the club and perform essential maintenance tasks. Similarly, at the end of the season, a “Packing Up” day is held to prepare the club for the winter break.
As with any river, flooding is a common occurrence. However, to minimise risks, the clubhouse is raised to avoid flooding, although the boat park remains at risk. Many members choose to take their boats home for the winter, but it is strongly advised to secure boats whenever possible. Additionally, the river experiences very small tides in April and August.
Avon Sailing Club places a significant emphasis on security. The main gate and clubhouse are secured by combination locks, and access to the clubhouse requires a key. Members can obtain a key by contacting any member of the committee whose contact information can be found on the club's website.
