Austral Physie (Austral Physical Culture)

Austral Physie (Austral Physical Culture) is a vibrant and inclusive dance club located in Austral, New South Wales. The club offers classes for girls and ladies on Thursdays at Austral Public School. Austral Physie is proud to be a part of United Physical Culture, a brand new Physie association that launched in 2023.

As a not-for-profit organisation, Austral Physie is dedicated to providing a welcoming and supportive environment where girls and ladies can build confidence, strength, and fitness. The club aims to foster long-lasting friendships while promoting the love for the sport of Physie.

United Physical Culture, the parent association of Austral Physie, was founded by six strong and accomplished clubs and is guided by an experienced and professional board. The association is committed to transparency, fairness, and support, ensuring a bright future for the sport of Physie.

Physie, short for Physical Culture, is a uniquely Australian dancesport that originated in 1892. It is a blend of aerobic exercise, basic ballet techniques, and contemporary dance. The dance routines are taught over a season, which runs from February to November each year.

A typical Physie class at Austral Physie includes various routines such as marching, introduction, relaxed, exercises, floor drill, rhythm, and dance. These routines focus on precision, positions, and coordination while incorporating elements of jazz or hip hop.

Physie is not only an individual dance sport but also embraces a team-based approach. Competitions are held from August to November, offering an opportunity for members to showcase their skills and passion for Physie. While Physie is traditionally a women's sport, Austral Physie welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, starting from 3 years old. It is not uncommon to see multiple generations of family members sharing the joy of Physie, from mothers and daughters to sisters, cousins, and even grandmothers.
