Australian Hung Kuen Kung Fu is a traditional martial arts club located in the Moreton Bay Regional area. They offer a variety of classes for all ages and skill levels. The club specialises in teaching Hung Kuen (also known as Hung Ga) Kung Fu, which is one of the most popular martial art styles in Southern China.
Hung Kuen Kung Fu is renowned for its devastating close-range hand techniques, delivered through a strong-rooted stance. This style combines the techniques of five animals – Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon – to provide a comprehensive system for both health and self-defence. It emphasises a balance of hard and soft power, as well as internal focus and mental concentration.
Stance training is a crucial aspect of Hung Kuen Kung Fu, as it serves as the foundation for launching hand and arm techniques. The footwork in this style has been developed over centuries to adapt to various fighting surfaces, such as rice paddy fields, ship decks, and hard ground. Kicks are limited to hip height and below to maintain balance and stability.
In addition to physical techniques, Hung Kuen Kung Fu also emphasises the cultivation of Chi, the body's own inner energy. Students learn to harness and utilise this energy for increased inner health and self-defence purposes. As students progress through the curriculum, the cultivation, and utilisation of Chi become more important.
Another key component of Hung Kuen Kung Fu is the conditioning of the body, particularly the arms and hands. Through specific exercises, the club helps students toughen their arms and hands, making their strikes and blocks more formidable in self-defence situations.
Australian Hung Kuen Kung Fu is led by Sifu Jim Wilkinson, a highly skilled instructor who commands the attention and respect of all his students. He has a unique ability to communicate and build rapport with his students, helping them gain confidence in social situations and improve their focus.
The club offers a wide range of classes, including 12 classes specifically designed for kids, mixed adult classes open to all skill levels, women's classes focused on fitness and self-defence, non-combat classes that emphasise the philosophical and meditative aspects of Kung Fu, and personal training programmes tailored to individual needs. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced martial artist, Australian Hung Kuen Kung Fu welcomes all levels of ability.
