Biography
Hailing from the small town of Nhill in Victoria, Lucy Stephan's journey into the world of rowing began during her high school years. By 2009, she had already graduated and quickly ascended the ranks in the rowing community. Just two years later, she earned a spot on Victoria's state team, showcasing her budding talent in the women's youth eight, where her team finished third.
Lucy's dedication bore fruit in 2012 when she represented Australia at the junior level, winning a silver medal in the coxless four at the World Rowing Championships. The following year, at just 21 years old, she made a remarkable senior international debut, securing gold in the women's eight at the 2013 World Rowing Cup I in Sydney.
Her versatility as an athlete was evident between 2014 and 2015 as she competed in various events, including the pair, four, and eight at multiple World Rowing Cups and Championships. Her resilience was tested in 2016 when she was a last-minute addition to the Rio Olympics team. Although the campaign did not end as hoped, Lucy’s determination only grew stronger.
She bounced back spectacularly, clinching gold in the women's four at the 2017 World Rowing Cups. The subsequent years saw her continuing to amass medals, including a monumental victory at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Alongside her teammates Annabelle McIntyre, Jessica Morrison, and Rosemary Popa, Lucy achieved a historic Olympic gold, setting an Olympic best time.
The accolades kept coming, and in 2022, Lucy’s contributions to the sport were recognized with an Order of Australia medal. As she continues her illustrious career, Lucy remains a formidable presence on the water, proving her mettle time and again in various international competitions.
