Kyle Chalmers (AU)
Biography
Kyle Chalmers has firmly etched his name into the annals of Australian swimming history. Born in Ashford, South Australia, and raised in Port Lincoln, Kyle's journey to the top of the swimming world began in the pools of St. Andrew’s Anglican College on the Sunshine Coast. His breakthrough moment came at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where at just 18 years old, he stormed from seventh place at the turn to clinch the gold in the men’s 100m freestyle, becoming Australia's youngest Olympic swimming champion since Ian Thorpe.
Kyle continued to make waves, literally and figuratively, on the international stage. Competing in his first World Championships in 2015, he showcased his prowess with a stellar performance in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay, setting the stage for future successes. His exploits didn’t stop there; at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, he broke three Games records and added multiple gold medals to his collection.
Despite battling injuries that led to surgeries on his heart and shoulder, Kyle’s resilience saw him triumph at the 2019 World Championships, bagging multiple medals across individual and relay events. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics saw him battle it out in a nail-biting final against Caeleb Dressel, finishing a close second and earning a silver medal.
A lover of Australian Rules football, Kyle often found solace away from the pool by engaging in a kickabout with his team in Adelaide. His father Brett’s legacy in the SANFL and AFL clearly influenced Kyle’s sporting journey. Additionally, he is a passionate keeper of reptiles, managing an impressive collection that has become a unique side interest.
As he prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Kyle’s determination and hunger for success remain undiminished. He cemented his place on the Australian team with an emphatic victory in the 100m freestyle at the national trials. While he has hinted that Paris could be his last Olympic stint, his fans remain hopeful of more spectacular performances from this freestyle sprint sensation.
Join us in cheering Kyle on as he looks to add more chapters to his incredible swimming career and leave an indelible mark on the sport.
