Biography
Kurtis Mathews, a diver hailing from Sydney, has made a splash in the world of diving with his incredible flexibility and acrobatic prowess. Originally enrolled in swimming classes as a young boy, it was his swim coach who first noticed Kurtis’s unique potential for diving. At just 10 years old, a week-long 'learn to dive' holiday program in Perth quickly captured his enthusiasm for the sport.
Recognized by Diving Australia’s National Talent Identification Program, Kurtis and his family relocated to Queensland when he was 12 to immerse him in Brisbane's high-performance diving program. His journey took him to the United States where he made a significant impact in the American college circuit, clinching Texas A&M University's first-ever NCAA diving titles in both the 1m and 3m events in 2022. He balanced his athletic achievements with academics, pursuing a degree in biomedical science.
Kurtis has showcased his diving prowess on international stages, debuting at his home Commonwealth Games in 2018 and later competing in the 2024 World Championships in Doha. His standout performance at the Australian championships in June 2024 secured his spot for the Paris Olympics, where he decisively outperformed Tokyo Olympian Shixin Li in the 3m springboard event.
