Biography
Joshua Yong’s love for swimming started early, diving into the pool at just three years old in Brunei. Alongside his brother Jayden, Joshua initially trained with the Casey TigerSharks during summer holidays in Melbourne, fostering a keen sense of competition that stoked his passion for the sport.
Joshua’s career took off when he moved to Perth for training under Mick Palfrey at West Coast Swimming Club. His dedication paid off when he first represented Australia at the 2019 World Junior Championships in Budapest. There, he excelled in breaststroke events and relays, marking the beginning of his journey on the international stage.
In Birmingham, Joshua made waves in his Commonwealth Games debut, reaching the finals in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke. His crowning achievement came at the 2022 Short Course World Championships, setting a world record in the 4x100m medley relay alongside teammates like Matthew Temple and Kyle Chalmers.
At the national level, Joshua continued to impress, securing silver in the 100m and 50m breaststroke at the 2023 Australian Championships. His perseverance in the sport shone brightly at the 2024 Australian Championships, where he claimed bronze in the 200m breaststroke, improving his personal best by a remarkable three seconds.
The pinnacle of Joshua's achievements came at the Australian Olympic trials in Brisbane. He clinched his spot for the Paris Olympics by finishing second in the 100m breaststroke, narrowly meeting the Olympic qualifying time. Joshua described the moment as surreal, a culmination of years of dedication and hard work. His journey is a testament to his unyielding spirit and passion for swimming as he heads towards Paris 2024.
