Biography
Jack Hargreaves' journey from the small town of Nyngan in New South Wales to becoming an Olympic gold medallist is a story packed with dedication and resilience. Starting his education at St Joseph's College in Sydney, Jack initially took up rowing to maintain his fitness for rugby. However, his talent on the water soon outshined his prowess on the pitch, leading him to join Sydney University’s Boat Club after high school.
In 2013, Jack's rowing career began to take off when he was selected to represent New South Wales in the youth eight competition. He quickly became a fixture in the senior team, competing consistently from 2014 to 2023 and winning the King’s Cup six times. His breakthrough came in 2013 when he represented Australia at the World Rowing U23 Championship in the men's eight. The following year, he secured a silver medal in the men's pair event at the same championship.
Missing out on the Rio 2016 Olympics was a setback for Jack, but he bounced back by joining the men’s National Training Centre. His persistence paid off with gold medals at multiple World Rowing Cups and World Championships in 2017 and 2018. These victories culminated in his crew being named the 2018 FISA Male Crew of the Year.
Jack’s perseverance helped him and the men’s four qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games, where they triumphed with a gold medal. This victory broke Great Britain's string of five consecutive gold medals in the men's four, marking a historic moment for Australian rowing.
Continuing his momentum, Jack participated in six events in 2022 and 2023, securing one gold and four silver medals. In 2024, Jack, along with his Tokyo gold medal teammates Alexander Purnell and Spencer Turrin, joined the men's eight team, aiming for Australia's first gold in the event. The crew made it to the World Rowing Cup II final, finishing in a commendable fourth place.
