Genevieve Longman
Genevieve Longman (AU)
Biography
Genevieve Longman, the standout goalkeeper for the Aussie Stingers, didn't plan on diving into the world of water polo, but fate had other plans. Growing up in Perth, she was the quintessential sporty kid, giving everything from netball to soccer a go. Her water polo journey began unexpectedly when she filled in as a goalkeeper for a local team and discovered a new passion. The challenge, the blend of team dynamics and individual prowess, and the physicality of the sport captivated her instantly.
Despite not considering herself a natural swimmer, Genevieve found her niche defending the goal. The rush of adrenaline she feels when making a crucial save is unmatched. After showcasing her skills in the Australian Water Polo League, she earned her place on the national team in 2019. Since then, she has been a steadfast member, contributing significantly to the team's efforts.
Her performance in international competitions has been notable. In 2022, she helped the team secure sixth place at the World Championships in Budapest. The following year, the Stingers narrowly missed a podium finish at the World Aquatic Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. They faced a tough loss to Spain in the semi-finals and a close match against Italy in the battle for third place. The 2024 World Championships in Doha saw the team finishing sixth again, with Genevieve playing a key role in their victories and close matches.
Off the pool, Genevieve is equally dedicated to her academics. She holds a bachelor's degree in international relations from the University of Western Australia and has furthered her education with a postgraduate law degree from the University of Technology Sydney.
