Biography
Derek Gee, the talented track cyclist from Canada, has been instrumental in driving Canada's success in the men's team pursuit. With an impressive performance at the 2019 UCI Track World Championships, where the team surprised everyone by competing for the bronze medal, Derek proved his mettle by helping them finish fourth overall. His Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games was equally commendable, as he played a crucial role in the men’s team pursuit that achieved Canada’s best result in the event since 1932, securing a fifth-place finish. Alongside his teammate Michael Foley, Derek also showcased his skills in the Madison event. Derek's cycling journey began during his teenage years when he participated in both road and track cycling. Despite narrowly missing out on the opportunity to compete in the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships due to his age, Derek shifted his focus to road cycling. His dedication led him to represent Canada at the junior division of the 2014 and 2015 UCI Road World Championships. After a brief hiatus from competitive cycling to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree at Queen’s University, Derek rediscovered his passion for the sport during a training camp at the Milton velodrome. His subsequent accomplishments, including winning silver in the omnium at the 2016 Canadian Championships and clinching podium finishes at various World Cup events, underscore his unwavering commitment to excellence. As a multi-talented individual, Derek not only excels in cycling but also harbors interests outside the sport. His ambition to delve into high performance sport management or coaching post-retirement reflects his dedication to the athletic realm. A keen birding enthusiast, Derek finds solace in observing and documenting various bird species, showcasing his curiosity and appreciation for wildlife.
