Biography
Aoife Coughlan's judo journey began at the tender age of five, driven by a family passion deeply rooted in her parents' love for the sport. Originating from Ireland, her parents found love through judo during their university days before making a life in Australia. Settling in Traralgon, Victoria, Aoife's judo training required dedication and long drives to the nearest clubs, an effort shared by her siblings Eoin and Maeve, with Eoin notably representing Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Aoife combined her sporting prowess with academic pursuits, earning a degree in exercise science and sport & recreation management from Victoria University by 2020. Balancing studies, training, and coaching, she built a strong foundation that saw her winning multiple regional medals and competing at the World Junior Championships early in her career.
Her competitive highlights include winning the 2015 Oceanian Cadet and Junior Championships, and various international successes such as bronze medals at the 2017 European Cup and 2019 Prague European Open. In 2021, she achieved fifth place at the prestigious Doha Masters and bronze at the Asian-Pacific Judo Championships in the -70kg category.
Aoife's Olympic debut came at Tokyo 2020, where she showcased her skills by advancing to the round of 16. She continued to excel, winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, a moment made special by the presence of her Irish relatives, including her grandmother. Later that year, she secured her first Grand Slam medal with a silver in Tokyo, followed by a gold at the 2023 Portugal Grand Prix.
Aoife's understanding of the sport's demanding nature is profound, yet she approaches it with a philosophical mindset.
