Biography
Alexander Purnell has had an illustrious rowing career representing Australia on the international stage. Born in Brisbane, Alexander discovered his passion for rowing at Sydney's Shore School, where he first began to hone his skills. His talent quickly propelled him to represent Australia in youth competitions, including the Junior World Rowing Championships and the World Rowing U23 Championships, where he bagged a bronze medal.
Upon completing high school, Alexander continued to pursue his rowing ambitions, joining the Sydney University Boat Club. His exceptional performances at the Intervarsity competitions in 2014 and 2015 did not go unnoticed, leading to higher accolades and catching the eye of New South Wales rowing selectors.
Alexander's domestic success includes being a pivotal force in New South Wales' triumphant wins in three consecutive King’s Cups from 2017 to 2019. His prowess and determination led to his selection for the senior Australian team in 2017, where he competed in World Rowing Cups and the World Rowing Championships, securing silver in the men's eight category.
In subsequent years, Alexander found success in the quad scull team, achieving silver medals at both the 2018 World Championships and the 2019 World Rowing Cup II. His crowning achievement arrived ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when he joined Australia's famed coxless four team. In a thrilling final, the team clinched gold with an Olympic record time, an extra special moment shared with his brother Nick, marking a family milestone.
Post-Tokyo, Alexander's winning streak continued with gold at the 2022 World Rowing Cup II and the Stewards Challenge Cup. Recently, at the 2023 Rowing World Championships, he played a crucial role in qualifying for the Paris Olympics, securing a spot for the Australian men's four team. As he gears up for Paris 2024, Alexander remains a significant figure in the world of rowing, showcasing his unwavering commitment and athletic prowess.
