Abbey Caldwell
Abbey Caldwell (AU)
Biography
Abbey Caldwell has swiftly become one of the standout names in Australian middle-distance running. Hailing from Melbourne, Abbey dived into athletics at the age of 5, inspired by her siblings. Through her teenage years, she showcased her prowess by clinching medals in various middle-distance events at the national level. Her rise continued as she donned the green and gold at the World U20 Championships and the World Cross Country Championships in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
The transition from junior to senior competition wasn't without challenges, especially during the pandemic. However, 2021 marked a turning point when Abbey secured a second-place finish in the National 1500m, just behind Linden Hall. This performance sparked her belief in competing among the elite. Her momentum only grew in 2022 with a bronze medal in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games and another bronze in the 4x2km mixed relay at the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst.
2023 proved to be a breakthrough year for Abbey. She consistently smashed her personal bests across the 800m, 1000m, 1500m, and mile events. Her achievements on home soil were highlighted by a second-place finish in the National 1500m and a near-national record in the 800m with a time of 1:58.62. Representing Australia in the 800m and 1500m at the Budapest World Championships, Abbey made it to the semi-finals in both events, narrowly missing a spot in the 800m final by just 0.06 seconds.
As she gears up for her Olympic debut in Paris 2024, Abbey continues to be a force to reckon with on the track.
