Ashcombe Valley Archers is an established archery club located in Newton Abbot, Devon. Founded in 1992, the club operates under the guidance of the National Field Archery Society (NFAS). As a field archery club, Ashcombe Valley Archers organises and participates in competition shoots both locally and nationally. Many of the club's members have achieved notable success in their respective archery styles, holding records and national championship titles.
As a non-profit organisation, Ashcombe Valley Archers reinvests all funds earned through membership fees and shooting events back into the club. This ensures that members benefit from well-maintained equipment and targets, allowing for the provision of high-quality shoots. The club warmly welcomes new members and visitors.
The shoot calendar for 2023 currently does not include any open shoots, but interested individuals are encouraged to check back for future events. The club's site features a course consisting of 36 3D targets, providing archers with an exciting and challenging shooting experience. Hot and cold food and drinks are available throughout the day for participants' convenience.
To participate in shoots, all archers must be full members of the NFAS, while walkers are required to be associate members. Membership cards should be presented upon request. The club and landowners hold no liability for loss or damage outside the insurance cover provided by the NFAS.
The shoot fee for participants includes an entry fee of 10 for adults, 4 for juniors, and free admission for cubs. Payment can be made through cheques payable to Ashcombe Valley Archers or via BACS transfer to the club's HSBC Newton Abbot account. Pre-paid entries are mandatory, and all entrants must submit a completed application form to the shoot organiser's address mentioned in the form.
The club's location can be found at Middle Rixdale Farm, Luton, Devon TQ13 0BN. Detailed directions are available on the club's website.
For those interested in learning the sport of archery, Ashcombe Archers organises beginners' courses twice a year, during spring and autumn. These courses are designed for individuals who have little to no experience in archery, such as those who have shot occasionally at country fairs, in the guides/scouts, or at school. Advertisements for the courses can be found on the club's website and Facebook page. Enrolments are on a first-come, first-served basis.
Membership fees for Ashcombe Archers are 70 per year for adults and 35 for those under 16. Members gain access to the club's shoot ground throughout the year, which features a permanent course with 3D targets set in woodland and field locations. There is also a practise range available to help members improve their skills. The club welcomes a variety of bow types, including longbows, flatbows, recurves, and compound bows, catering to various shooting styles and preferences.
For those interested in joining Ashcombe Valley Archers, the beginners' course is highly recommended. This structured 5-week course introduces participants to bare bow and freestyle archery, covering safety and equipment maintenance. The course concludes with a shoot around the competition course and the option to join both the NFAS and Ashcombe Valley Archers. Each session of the beginners' course includes a minimum of 1 hour of teaching.
The cost of the 5-week course is 70 for adults and 35 for those under 16, which includes the supply of all necessary bows and ancillary equipment.
