Shinkyokushin Karate, meaning “Way of the Ultimate Truth,” is a Japanese karate style that incorporates techniques from various martial arts systems such as Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Shaolin, and Kempo. Developed by Master Masutatsu Oyama, this style is dynamic and popular, thanks to its combination of the best techniques from different systems.
Master Masutatsu Oyama was the founder of Kyokushin, the ultimate karate style, and the head of the world-wide Kyokushin-kai until his untimely death in 1994. Born in Korea in 1923, Oyama became a student of Gichin Funakoshi, who introduced karate to Japan. In 1947, Oyama won the All-Japan Karate Championships, which led him to dedicate his life to karate. He secluded himself in the mountains, engaging in intense and unique training methods such as standing under icy waterfalls, pounding trees to toughen his hands, and weight training with massive boulders.
Oyama's rigorous training paid off, and he astounded the karate world by battling bulls barehanded, defeating three bulls and ripping the horns off others.
In 1956, Oyama opened Kyokushinkai-Kan in Tokyo and expanded the style to include over 10,000,000 students across 50 countries. Oyama visited Australia in 1977 for the Australian Full Contact Championships. Following his death, administrative divisions arose in Japan and around the world. As a result, separate groups were formed, each striving to maintain Oyama's teachings and philosophies.
The Alpine Dojo is affiliated with a Japanese group that changed their name to “Shinkyokushin” in 2003, meaning “New Kyokushin.
At Alpine Dojo, participants can train under the guidance of experienced instructors, Sensei Geoff Miller and Sensei Sue Texler.
