Welcome to Akashi Shotokan Karate Club, a renowned karate association based in Leeds, New Zealand. Karate is a beautiful art that not only enhances physical fitness but also stimulates the mind through focus and concentration. At our club, we believe in tailoring our training to suit individual needs, taking into consideration skill levels, age, health, gender, and abilities.
The training environment at Akashi Shotokan Karate Club is built on the foundation of courtesy, respect, and self-discipline. Our experienced instructors will push you to be the best that you can be while maintaining a sociable, friendly, and fun atmosphere. We pride ourselves on providing high-level instruction to our students, and we also offer opportunities for all club members to train regularly with visiting world-class instructors.
We welcome children from as young as 4 years old to join our club. Encouraging children to take a break from screens and socialise with others, karate helps them become more confident and less vulnerable to bullying at school. Our female membership is also growing, with many women joining in the fun and training alongside their children. Karate knows no age limits, as our eldest member is 71 years old.
Regardless of your age and ability, you can improve your fitness and flexibility at your own comfortable pace.
Don't just take our word for it, talk to our children and adult students to find out why they train and the benefits they have experienced from starting karate. We invite you to come along to our mixed, family-friendly classes and try it for yourself – the first lesson is free.
In addition to our regular classes, we host events such as gradings, private lessons, courses, competitions, and squad training. We have a karate shop where you can find all the necessary gear and equipment. Follow our news and events section to stay updated on the latest happenings in our club.
