AikiKids (CLG) is an Aikido school located in Colonel Light Gardens, South Australia. It provides a non-violent alternative in the martial arts, specialising in neutralising attacks without having to damage an opponent. The school offers AikiKids classes that focus on discipline, respect, and personal development, which are essential qualities in the martial arts. AikiKids does not teach martial skills that harm children's growing bodies or promote a violent response to conflict.
Instead, students learn that being strong does not mean being a bully. There is no competition in Aikido, as the opponent is often seen as oneself, aligning with the principles of Budo (way of the warrior).
One of the main benefits of Aikido for children is that it is an effective self-defence choice that does not rely on physical strength. The AikiKids syllabus teaches techniques to effectively neutralise strikes and escape grabs and holds. However, as the children's bodies are still developing, AikiKids does not teach Aikido techniques that involve joint locking.
Apart from self-defence, AikiKids also helps children develop on multiple levels. The physical activities in the dojo enhance their coordination, balance, flexibility, and general muscle tone. Interacting with others in the dojo teaches humility, self-respect, and respect for others. Furthermore, periods of sitting quietly and still teach self-discipline and the ability to self-regulate between activity and stillness.
AikiKids classes are designed to accommodate the abundance of energy that children possess. The classes provide a combination of fun and physical activity, interspersed with moments of calm and focus. After practising Aikido, kids feel relaxed and have had a great time. AikiKids encourages students to practise Aikido to feel good, increase their confidence, strengthen themselves physically and mentally, and constantly challenge themselves.
The school also offers a Red Belt programme specifically for teenagers. These classes provide a higher level of physical training in a safe and respectful environment. The Red Belt Classes allow teenagers to challenge themselves, build positive relationships, and develop into respectful and powerful individuals through the practise of Aikido. Teenagers who have achieved the Red Belt are also encouraged to join the younger classes, acting as mentors and seniors to their younger peers.
This gives them the opportunity to develop leadership skills such as responsibility, accountability, and compassion.
For those interested in joining AikiKids, there are various ways to get in touch. Interested individuals can call, send an email, or simply show up for practise to try a class or two. The location and class times are conveniently listed on their website. Fees for classes are outlined as well, and AikiKids is a registered provider, allowing parents to claim $100 per child (aged 5 to 15 years) towards member fees.
AikiKids is an initiative of the Adelaide Takemusu Aikido Club Inc. , which is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enabling people to practise Takemusu Aikido. The Adelaide Takemusu Aikido Club Inc. operates as a not-for-profit association and proudly holds membership with the Australian Takemusu Aikido Renmei Inc.
