Aikido Shinryukan NSW is a well-established sports club located in the vibrant Coffs Harbour City Council in Australia. Offering classes in both Woologoolga and Coffs Harbour, this club invites individuals of all ages and skill levels to join their community and experience the art of Aikido.
Aikido is a classical Japanese martial art that was developed in the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba, also known as O-Sensei (Great Teacher). O-Sensei was not only a highly skilled martial artist but also a devoted student of religion and philosophy. He believed that martial arts should serve a greater purpose than self-defence and aimed to use it as a means of personal development and coping with the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
In Aikido, practitioners never clash with an attacker head-on. Instead, they utilise evasive and circular movements, blending with the attack and leading the attacker into throws or joint locking techniques. Although Aikido is an effective form of self-defence, its techniques are designed to avoid causing permanent injury to an attacker. This martial art can be practised by individuals of all sizes and ages, as it relies on using the attacker's size and strength against them.
Aikido classes are conducted with a spirit of encouragement, geared towards the individual's ability and comfort level.
While the focus of Aikido is not on weapons practise, the movements are derived from defence against weapons attacks. The club does incorporate some weapons training using wooden practise weapons such as the staff, sword, and knife. It is important to approach weapons training with seriousness and caution due to the potential for injury.
Unlike many other martial arts, Aikido does not involve competition or tournaments. Learning is achieved through repetitive practise in a thoughtful and studious atmosphere. The practise can range from soft and flowing to vigorous and aerobic, depending on the preferences of the practitioner and their partner. Aikido promotes suppleness, flexibility, concentration, and the development of a confident and balanced personality.
It does not rely on strength and can be practised by almost anyone.
