Absolute Aikido - At The Studio Martial Arts Centre

'Absolute Aikido – At The Studio Martial Arts Centre' is a well-established martial arts club located in Dereham, New Zealand. Founded by Steve Usher in 2009, the club initially trained at the Dereham Leisure Centre before moving to its current home in February 2013. The new facility, The Studio Martial Arts and Fitness Centre, boasts a custom-made dojo with a heavily sprung floor and thick matting, specifically designed to accommodate Aikido practise. The club is a proud member of the Aikikai Zen Ten Aikido Association.

Instructor Sensei Jeff Podolski, who took over the leadership of Absolute Aikido when it relocated, brings a wealth of experience to the club. He began his Aikido journey under the guidance of Sensei Huw Dillon in 1999 and has since trained with various clubs and students. Over the past five years, he has had the privilege of studying further under the tutelage of Sensei Frank Burlingham and Sensei Vince Hammond.

Absolute Aikido offers training sessions every Wednesday from 8pm to 10pm, with an optional one-hour session available. The cost per session is 7, and an annual membership fee is applicable. The club welcomes beginners and offers the first class free of charge, allowing newcomers to experience and explore the art of Aikido before committing.

Aikido, a Japanese Martial Art, was created in the 1920s by sensei Morihei Ueshiba. Ueshiba, a master in classical Japanese Martial Arts, developed Aikido as a practise that emphasises blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting their force rather than opposing it directly. Unlike many other martial arts, Aikido has no competitive element. The primary goal of Aikido training is not to perfect specific techniques but to improve one's character in accordance with the principles of nature.
