The dojo, owned and operated by Iain Abernethy, a globally recognised 6th Dan martial artist, offers a unique approach to karate. The AJK dojo practises Jissen Karate-Do, which combines traditional martial arts techniques with modern western training methods. The objective of the group is to develop motivated students to achieve individual excellence in the physical, theoretical, and technical aspects of pragmatic karate.
At Abernethy Jissen Karate-Do, the focus is on the original objectives of karate, which was initially designed as a civilian system for self-defence. The instructors believe in providing training in realistic self-defence, situational awareness, escape skills, striking, throwing, joint-locking, takedowns, ground-fighting, and power generation, among other essential skills.
The main instructor, Iain Abernethy, brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the school. With four books on martial arts and personal development, and over twenty instructional martial arts DVDs, Iain is globally recognised in the martial arts community. Additionally, Murray Denwood, a 5th dan and another senior instructor, and Fred Moore, a 4th dan with over twenty years of training, contribute significantly to the club's approach.

Please note that the dojo is a private facility and access is granted only to individuals who have received permission to train from Iain Abernethy. This ensures that the dojo is dedicated to taking beginners from white belt onwards and focuses on providing progressive training and support.
