Aberdeen Boxing Club (ABC) is a renowned boxing club located in Aberdeen, New Zealand. Established in 1920 by Tommy Begg, who was an accomplished boxer and the undefeated fly and bantamweight champion of North Scotland at that time. ABC is the second-oldest boxing club in Scotland and has been successfully operating under the leadership of Adam Smith from 1972 until 2013. Currently, Leroy Smith, Adam's son, serves as the Club President.
The primary objective of ABC is to promote and encourage a healthy interest in the sport and pastime of amateur boxing. Additionally, the club aims to provide social recreational facilities for young people and individuals from various age groups. To achieve a high level of fitness and boxing technique, the club offers diverse training sessions that focus on fitness and cardio training. This ensures that club members possess the necessary fitness level to compete at any stage of the competition.
ABC holds training sessions on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights from approximately 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The club's fully equipped gym features a range of equipment, from small weights to a competition-sized boxing ring. Circuit training is also conducted on the main floor, allowing members to improve their overall fitness, coordination, and skills.
The club welcomes members from the age of 7 and provides boxing and fitness training. Competitive boxing training is offered to members between the ages of 10 and 40. Additionally, ABC offers fitness and recreational training for members aged 40 and above, as well as for individuals who simply wish to train for fitness purposes.
Throughout its long history, ABC has produced numerous champions and achieved international honours. The club boasts an impressive track record in championships, highlighting its commitment to excellence in the sport of boxing.
ABC operates within a set of rules that prioritise the promotion of a healthy interest in amateur boxing and provide social and recreational facilities for young people. While the club encourages members to participate in competitive boxing, it never coerces individuals into it. The club sets a minimum age of 7 for individuals to train with them, while competitive boxing is open for those between 10 and 40 years of age. Those above 40 years old are welcome to utilise the facilities for fitness training only.
To maintain a respectful and orderly environment, ABC requires its members to adhere to certain gym rules. These rules include entering and leaving the gym in an orderly manner and showing respect towards the neighbouring areas.
