Welcome to the Western Australia Underwater Hockey Club, the home of underwater hockey in Western Australia. Whether you're new to the sport or a seasoned player, we have something for everyone. Our club is open to all ages, genders, and abilities, providing a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Underwater hockey, also known as UWH, is a unique and exhilarating team sport played at the bottom of the pool, typically 2 metres deep. The objective is to score a goal by using a small bat to push a lead puck into the opposing team's goal. It is a physically challenging game that offers a thrill like no other, so be warned, it's highly addictive!
To get started, you will need a few essential pieces of equipment. These include a stick to touch the puck, a glove to protect your fist, fins to swim faster, a mask to see underwater, a cap to protect your ears, a snorkel for easy breathing on the surface, bathers for discretion, and of course, a puck and goals for gameplay.
We have games running in both metropolitan Perth and the country, allowing you to find a game that suits your location. For Perth games, please refer to our website, and for country games, we have the information you require. Our clubs are always eager to welcome new players, so if you're interested, simply contact your local club to find out when and where they play and what you need to bring along.
Club costs may vary, but generally include the nightly pool entry, pool hire contributions, and an annual membership to the Australian Underwater Federation. This ensures you have access to the facilities and support needed to enjoy the sport to its fullest.
Underwater hockey is a non-contact sport, much like basketball and netball. It is refereed by 3 in-water referees and 1 out-of-water referee. If a team commits a foul, the opposing team receives an advantage puck, and the culprit may be sent to the sin bin for a designated time. Common fouls include breaking, starting before the buzzer, obstruction, gloving, and more.
We are affiliated with the Australian Underwater Federation and hold a Level 3 accreditation as part of the Good Sports programme. This ensures that we provide a safe and healthy environment for families to play sports.
