About

The University of Tasmania Aikido Club, established in 1954, is a not-for-profit club located in Hobart, Australia. The Club practises the traditional art of Aikido, which was created by Morihei Ueshiba, also known as Ō sensei. Aikido is not just a martial art, but a reflection of Ueshiba's philosophy of universal peace and reconciliation.

Members of the University Aikido Club focus on energetic and safe practise, emphasising the use of the opponent's momentum and force, as well as the coordination of one's own mind and body structure. Techniques in Aikido may include holds, throws, locks, and pins. Advanced students also have the opportunity to train with traditional wooden weapons such as the bokken (sword) and jo (staff).

The Club is affiliated with Aikido Kenkyukai International, which connects them to the AIKKAI FOUNDATION and AIKIDO WORLD HEADQUARTERS in Japan. Through this affiliation, the Club's gradings are internationally recognised. Aikikai Honbu Dojo, located in Tokyo, is directly linked to the University of Tasmania Aikido Club through their affiliation with Aikido Kenkyukai International.

Aikido is not primarily a combat system, but a means of self-improvement and the development of an aiki mind and body. The art has no tournaments, competitions, contests, or sparring. Instead, techniques are learned cooperatively and practised at a pace suitable for each individual's abilities. The goal of Aikido, according to its founder, is not to defeat others, but to overcome one's own negative characteristics and function better mentally and physically.

Although Aikido can be used for self-defence, competition is prohibited in order to minimise the risk of serious injury.

The University of Tasmania Aikido Club has a rich history. Originally known as the University Judo Club, Aikido was introduced in the early 1970s. As interest in Aikido grew, the Club began offering specific classes and dedicated study. In 1972, the Club officially became the University of Tasmania Judo and Aikido Club.

The University of Tasmania Aikido Club welcomes individuals of all skill levels who are interested in learning and practising the art of Aikido. Training is aimed at sustained and dedicated practise in order to achieve proficiency over an extended period of time. The Club provides a supportive and friendly environment for members to develop their Aikido skills and improve themselves both physically and mentally.
