Hobart Hash House Harriers and Harriettes (H5) is a sports club located in Hobart, Australia. Affectionately known as “A Drinking Club with a Running Problem,” H5 is a socially responsible group that combines a love for running with a passion for socialising.
The club holds regular runs every Monday at 6:30 pm, with the location changing each week. During the summer months, members gather for BBQ runs where they bring their own meat and enjoy drinks, bread, and sauce provided by the club. In the winter, pub runs are organised, and participants are encouraged to bring a torch and supper. The run fee is $5, but during special events such as the Melbourne Cup Run or charity runs, the fee may vary.
The average run length for H5 is 55 minutes, and the pack typically consists of 25 to 35 members, although it has been as large as 50 in the past. The club welcomes both men and women, creating a mixed hash environment. Runners of all levels are encouraged to join, as there are ample areas for hashing for those who prefer a more leisurely pace.
After each run, the group gathers for a circle where misdemeanours and milestones are recognised, and jokes are shared. H5 uses markings such as “FT” for False Trail, “Ä” for Check, and “MÄC” for Master Check or Group Check.
For those interested in finding more hash clubs, H5 provides a hot hash link list that includes other local hash house harriers groups, such as Hobart Hash House Harriers (H4), Hobart Full Moon Hash House Harriers, Launceston Hash House Harriers (LH4 and LH3), and Burnie Hash House Harriers.
To contact H5, the club provides office bearers' information, including phone numbers and email addresses for the Grand Master, Joint Masters, On Sec/Trash, Hash Flash, Hash Lips, Hash Cash, Trail Master, Hash Hops, and Asset Managers. Additionally, there is an email address for general inquiries.
H5 is steeped in history, being founded on April 19, 1982, by Paddy Duffy, Alan “Easy Rider” Bowerman, Mike “Mad Dog” Bowerman, and N “Sarge” Sargison. The club has reached significant milestones, with over 500 runs as of March 31, 2023. Notable members include Adam “Sir Eve” Bridley, who reached 1799 runs, John “Governor” Ellsmore with 1442 runs, Alan “Count Zero” Bennett with 1410 runs, and Sharon “Highness” Willing with 1193 runs.
H5 is an inclusive sports club that offers a unique combination of running and socialising. Whether you're an experienced runner or new to the sport, H5 welcomes you to join their fun-filled events and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.
