About

Movements to create a sense of fluidity and flow. The transitions between postures are influenced by tai chi and Ashtanga, adding a unique element to the practise. Somatic therapy is also incorporated to explore and challenge habits, allowing for a deeper understanding of the mind-body connexion.

SomaChi Yoga values the importance of being present in the movement, rather than simply going through the motions. The practise is about enjoyment in motion, encouraging students to find joy and pleasure in their yoga journey. While the style is contemporary, it maintains respect for tradition and lineage, ensuring a balance between modern scientific research and spiritual and artistic values.

The studio, located in North Fitzroy, offers 6-week terms with classes led by Lianne Metcalf, the founder of SomaChi Yoga. Classes take place at the Holden Street Neighbourhood House and cost $108 for the term. The current term starts on May 2, 2022, and runs until June 6, 2022. Registration and purchases can be made through Momo Yoga.

SomaChi Yoga is not just limited to studio classes. The style is featured in a number of yoga studios, and the SomaChi community actively participates in various events and activities. The studio also offers yoga teacher training programmes, both certificate and advanced, for those interested in deepening their practise and sharing their knowledge with others.

In addition to yoga classes and teacher training, SomaChi Yoga takes people on sacred pilgrimages to India. These journeys provide an opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich culture and spiritual traditions of India while deepening their yoga practise.

The SomaChi community values the balance between contemporary and traditional practises. They are deeply interested in Buddhism, Taoism, and shamanistic practises, embracing the dharmic benefits of yoga. By maintaining dignity and respect for the practise, SomaChi Yoga aims to build an explorative and playful society that expands its experience of body, mind, and energy.

To truly understand SomaChi, it is recommended to attend 10 or more classes, allowing oneself to fully immerse in the practise and experience its benefits. The studio is well-known for its thorough warm-ups, ensuring the body is prepared for a dynamic class. The use of circular and rolling movements creates a sense of fluidity, while somatic therapy challenges habits and encourages a deeper exploration of sensations.

At SomaChi Yoga, the focus is on creating a safe and supportive environment where students can truly connect with themselves and their practise. With the guidance of skilled teachers, students can explore their internal and external sensations, and ultimately find greater ease and expression in their yoga journey.
