Redlands Martial Arts Academy, also known as Seishin Zenryoku, has been a prominent sports club in the Redlands community since its establishment in 1994. Led by Head Instructor Kyoshi Shane Degney, along with assistant instructors Sensei's Karen Stone, Mark Stone, and Steven Taylor, the academy offers a wide range of martial arts classes for both children and adults.
The instructors at Redlands Martial Arts Academy are fully accredited by the Martial Arts Industry Association, ensuring that students receive top-quality instruction. Additionally, all instructors hold Blue Cards issued by the Commission for Young People, as well as Senior First Aid and CPR Certificates, prioritising the safety and well-being of their students.
The club specialises in traditional Shotokan Karate, adhering to its principles and techniques. However, they also operate the RMAA Fight Centre, a dedicated Muay Thai gym run by Kyoshi Shane Degney. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced martial artist, Redlands Martial Arts Academy welcomes you to join their classes or simply observe.
Their training facility is fully equipped and boasts a full-time schedule of classes. On Mondays and Wednesdays, they offer Muay Thai classes for juniors and seniors in the evenings. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to Karate classes for kids and adults. On Fridays, they hold fitness classes, and Saturdays offer Karate classes for all age groups.
Sunday is reserved for the tournament team, which meets on the first Sunday of each month. Personal training sessions for Karate, Muay Thai, or Fitness are also available by appointment for individuals or small groups.
Karate originated in the Ryukyu Islands, which is now Okinawa, Japan. It was later introduced to the Japanese mainland during a time of cultural exchange between Japan and China. Karate has since been taught systematically in Japan, and Redlands Martial Arts Academy follows in this tradition.
Redlands Martial Arts Academy places a strong emphasis on competitions, and its tournament team has achieved significant success over the years. The academy primarily competes in the National All Styles (NAS) tournament circuit, which includes regional rounds, state championships, and national titles. In 2018, their most successful year to date, the team won a total of 17 National Titles at NAS. Senpai Josh Wiltshire even earned the coveted Male Champion of Champions Title.
Sensei Mark Stone, along with fellow RMAA student Sensei Shannon French, won the Male and Female Champion of Champions Titles, respectively, in 2016. Sensei Karen Young (nee Stone), a former club member, had previously won the title in 2005. These achievements highlight the skill and dedication of the instructors and students at Redlands Martial Arts Academy.
