(Melbourne Kyudo Kai) はじめまして! Welcome to our club! Melbourne Kyudo Kai (MKK) is a traditional Japanese archery club located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. With a strong focus on the spirit and body, we offer a unique opportunity to learn and practise the art of Kyudo.
Established in 2013, MKK is the longest running Kyudo club in Victoria. We are a not-for-profit incorporated association dedicated to supporting, practising, and informing about Kyudo within the state of Victoria. We are also affiliated with the Australian Kyudo Association (AKA), the national administrative entity for Kyudo in Australia.
At MKK, we believe in the importance of self-perfection and striving for excellence in all areas of life. Kyudo is not just about hitting the target, but rather about achieving a state of self-mastery. Our training philosophy is rooted in building a strong foundation and fostering personal growth both inside and outside the dojo.
We offer introductory courses for those interested in trying Kyudo. Led by our experienced senior instructors with 3rd Dan and above, these courses provide a taste of Kyudo training. Participants will learn the basics of Kyudo, including proper equipment usage, and experience our unique training style and environment. Be sure to register your interest as spots are limited!
MKK's regular training sessions take place at Victoria University, Footscray Park campus every Sunday from 9:30am to 12pm, followed by 28m shooting from 12pm to 1pm for our more experienced members. We have recently added an extra training session on Fridays from 6pm to 8pm in preparation for the 2023 shinsa (grading) and fortnightly thereafter. If you're interested in observing a training session or have any questions, feel free to get in touch with us.
In addition to Kyudo training, MKK provides a place to practise the Japanese language and culture. We have Japanese-speaking members who can help you practise your Japanese or assist if you have difficulty with English. We also uphold the traditional etiquette observed in martial arts dojos, promoting respect, humility, and the safety of our members.
Joining MKK comes with several benefits. Our members have access to yearly seminars conducted by generous international visitors who hold 5th Dan and above. We also participate in regular interstate competitions online, and through AKA, our members have the opportunity to take part in events organised by the International Kyudo Federation (IKYF), including Dan gradings.
Whether you're new to Kyudo or have experience in archery, Melbourne Kyudo Kai welcomes all individuals who are interested in learning and practising traditional Japanese archery. Join our community and embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Get in touch with us today to learn more about Melbourne Kyudo Kai and how you can become a member of our club.
