With an official distance of 42.195 kilometres, a marathon tests endurance both mental and physical. Runners try to run the distance as quick as possible, with some using a run/walk strategy to ensure success. The race is based on the legend of Philippides, the greek messenger who, after the battle of Marathon in 490 BC, ran the distance without a rest before exclaiming “we have won” then collapsing and dying.
