The school believes in teaching swimming naturally, which is why they remove all flotation devices from their lessons. This allows students to discover their own natural abilities in the water and develop independence. By combining three spheres of development – water safety, the body’s natural impulses, and efficient use of the body – John Sugden Swim School aims to provide the best method of teaching swimming.
The school's approach is different from traditional swim schools as they do not use kickboards, flippers, noodles, pullbuoys, floaties, or back bubbles. They believe that students learn more without these aids. Instead, their step-by-step method breaks down the complexity of learning to swim, making it easy and fun for students.
All instructors at John Sugden Swim School have attained the AustSwim Swim Teachers’ Certificate and have completed the school's comprehensive training programme. This ensures that students have the necessary skills and confidence to be safe and proficient in the water.
The swim school offers a total of eight levels divided into three categories: Billabong, Lake, and Ocean. The Billabong levels focus on water craft and safety, while the Lake levels extend the focus to learning correct swim craft. The Ocean levels train swimmers for competitiveness in a variety of disciplines and begin the “Champions Journey” for students.
John Sugden, the founder of the swim school, is a highly skilled educator with over 30 years of experience in developing and facilitating athletes and swimmers. He aims to stimulate every child to be the best they can be in the water.
