The Brisbane Parkour Association is a sports club dedicated to promoting and teaching the discipline of parkour in Brisbane and the surrounding areas. Parkour is a physical training method that focuses on overcoming physical and mental obstacles, developing useful strength, and fostering self-improvement and self-understanding. It is a movement discipline that can be applied in emergency situations.
The association offers a variety of parkour classes, workshops, and training options for people of all ages and experience levels. Participants are encouraged to explore the city in new ways, improve their fitness, have fun, and meet new people. All instructors are qualified under the Australian Parkour Association’s Instructor Qualification programme, ensuring high standards of instruction, safety, and experience. Instructors also have “Working with Children Check” Blue Cards and there is always a first aid qualified instructor present at every class.
The Brisbane Parkour Association is a not-for-profit organisation that is committed to promoting the safe practise of parkour and delivering parkour education in south-east Queensland. The association aims to make parkour accessible to anyone and to foster a sense of self-progression, exploration, and play within the parkour community. They offer classes in the Brisbane CBD and surrounding areas.
The origins of parkour can be traced back to the early 1900s when Georges Hébert, a French Marine, developed the method known as “La Méthode Naturelle. ” This method focused on strengthening natural human capacities and was used as the principal training method for the French Navy. The motto “Be strong to be useful” (Être fort pour être utile) was derived from Hébert's teachings. David Belle, the founder of modern parkour, learned from his grandfather and father, who shared their knowledge and experience with him.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, David and his friends took this training to the streets and forests of suburban Paris, creating what we know as parkour today.
The Brisbane Parkour Association has been active since 2012 and is deeply involved in the community. They offer workshops and programmes for various events and training sessions, including school holiday workshops and youth development programmes. They also collaborate with local councils and community groups to promote parkour and its benefits.
