time to time to challenge students. Instructors at the Australian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo & Chinese Boxing Federation of Melbourne are highly experienced and dedicated, ensuring that students receive the highest quality instruction.
The Australian Federation of Instructors was founded in 1981 by Kancho Barry Bradshaw. The aim of the organisation is to teach a combination of Tai-jitsu Ryu Jiu-jitsu, modified Kawaishi Judo, and Sil Lum Hung Kuen Chinese Boxing. This unique combination of martial arts not only creates a complete self-defence system but also focuses on the holistic development of each individual.
The Federation believes in using martial arts as a vehicle for character development, aiming to perfect the character of its participants physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and socially. It goes beyond just physical activity and strives to provide good health, intelligence, good character, and the ability to recognise worth in each student.
Jiu-jitsu, specifically Taijitsu Ryu Jiu-jitsu, is the unarmed martial art traditionally used by Japanese samurai as a last resort. It specialises in close hand-to-hand combat and emphasises good technique over strength. Students of Jiu-jitsu learn joint locking techniques, throwing, pressure points, grappling, and striking. Jiu-jitsu is considered a parent art form from which other martial arts like Judo, Karate, and Aikido have developed.
Judo, utilising the modified Kawaishi Method, teaches individuals to fall correctly with minimum injury, throw opponents using leverage rather than strength, and engage in ground grappling. The study of Judo promotes self-discipline, individual initiative, mental alertness, and physical fitness.
Chinese Boxing, specifically Sil Lum Hung Kuen Kung Fu, is a southern style Kung Fu taught at the Federation's Box Hill Academy. Classes include empty-handed set or form work, bag and mitt training, and partnered free-exercise. Sil Lum Hung Kuen Chinese Boxing helps students develop self-defence skills, physical coordination, discipline, and mental strength.
The benefits of learning martial arts at the Australian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo & Chinese Boxing Federation are numerous. Students not only become physically fit but also experience the fun and excitement of martial arts. They gain self-defence skills, improve their physical coordination, learn new skills, become more aware of their surroundings, develop discipline, and challenge their mind and body.
Classes at the Federation are diverse and dynamic. A typical Jiu-jitsu and Judo class begins with a warm-up consisting of breakfalling exercises to teach proper falling techniques and condition the body. Basic throwing techniques and hand arts, including restraint and control techniques, are then practised. Groundwork is also emphasised to develop skills in ground-fighting and body movement.
Each class concludes with a cool-down phase involving rolling techniques and a traditional bowing ceremony.
