Aikido Western Australia

Aikido Western Australia (Aikido WA) is a traditional Japanese martial arts dojo located in the heart of Perth. Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that follows the keen edge of Budo, or Martial Way. Unlike other martial arts, Aikido goes beyond the resolution of physical conflict and aims to unify mind and body as one.

Aikido WA is a branch of Aiki Kai Australia, the only recognised Aikido Grading & Teaching Authority since 1965. As a branch of Aiki Kai, all gradings at Aikido WA are officially recognised worldwide. It is also important to note that Aikido WA is a not-for-profit association, emphasising the dedication to the practise and teachings of Aikido rather than profit.

Aikido was created by Professor Morihei Ueshiba, who is known as O'Sensei, meaning “Great Teacher. ” O'Sensei dedicated his life to developing Aikido as a path away from the traditional concepts of martial arts. Aikido techniques are natural movements that form spontaneously when carefully practised. The Founder made a point of never teaching fixed or kata forms and emphasised that Aikido should not be used for evil means.

There is no competition in Aikido, and it can be practised by anyone, regardless of age, strength, or gender. It is often described as a way of cultivating a human being and building a Heaven on Earth, as stated by O'Sensei himself. The literal translation of Aikido is Ai (love or harmony), Ki (universal energy), and Do (the Way), which encapsulates the ultimate meaning and purpose of the art.

While Aikido has roots in traditional unarmed, spear, and sword techniques, it is not solely focused on defeating an opponent. Aikido practitioners study weapons, empty hand techniques, and multiple attacker situations to attain technical foundations but with the aim of harmony and unity. This sets Aikido apart from other martial arts and makes it a path away from the conventional concept of martial arts.

Aikido has been spread across the world through the international Aiki Kai organisation, created by O'Sensei for the global development of Aikido. The teachings of O'Sensei were passed down through his son and grandson, Kisshomaru Ueshiba and Moriteru Ueshiba, respectively. O'Sensei also sent his live-in students, known as Uchi-Deshi, to selected countries to teach and foster Aikido. Aikido WA is proud to be a part of this rich lineage and continues to uphold the teachings of O'Sensei.
