The founder and head instructor of Zendo Kai Karate is Sensei Tim Steel, a fifth-degree black belt who gained his black belt in July 1989. Sensei Tim trained under the guidance of Sensei Ian Cuthbert and Sensei Nariman Jedi as part of the United Karate Association. In 2001, he established Zendo Kai Karate with a vision to blend zen philosophy, Astanga yoga practises, and traditional wado ryu forms to develop the mind and body of individuals. Sensei Tim is also a certified Astanga yoga teacher and has studied Iado and jujitsu, incorporating this training into his unique teaching style.
The karate kids classes offered by Zendo Kai Karate have been immensely popular, instilling confidence, fitness, and well-being in children. Many children continue their karate practise into adulthood. The adult karate classes, held separately from the kids' classes, follow a more traditional martial approach but are open to beginners and experienced students alike.
Zendo Kai Karate also conducts self-defence classes against weapons throughout the year in Bromley. These certified classes, including gradings, are suitable for all ages, including karate kids. Additionally, the club continues to offer karate classes during school holidays in Bromley and organises week-long activity camps in West Wickham.
