And youth offers classes on Mondays and Thursdays at St. David's Presbyterian Church on 98 Elizabeth Avenue, next to Elizabeth Towers in St. John's. The classes are open to both beginners and experienced practitioners, with a focus on developing strong basic techniques and stances in Shotokan Karate and Judo.
Zanshin Dojo is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about sharing their love for martial arts with the community.
Zanshin Dojo is affiliated with Judo Canada, The Newfoundland & Labrador Judo Association, and KarateNL, ensuring that students receive high-quality training in a safe and supportive environment. The instructors at Zanshin Dojo are experienced and knowledgeable, providing guidance and encouragement to help students reach their full potential.
In Shotokan Karate, students learn the three pillars of training: kihon (basics), kata (forms or patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). Through consistent practice, students not only develop physical strength and agility but also foster the correct spirit and attitude required for mastery of the art. Kata is practised to promote fitness and flexibility, while kumite allows students to apply their techniques in real-life situations against opponents.
Judo classes at Zanshin Dojo focus on throwing, hold downs, and groundwork techniques, with an emphasis on both competitive and recreational aspects of the sport. Students learn various kata to perfect their techniques and participate in randori (free practice) to apply their skills against resisting opponents. Through judo training, students develop physical fitness, discipline, and self-defence skills in a fun and engaging atmosphere.
